LinkedIn: 3 Easy Ways to Improve Your Profile

On Wednesday, March 16, the Publicity Club of New England hosted our first-ever virtual session, live via webinar.

Our host was Leela Srinivasan, Senior Product Marketer at LinkedIn and her goal was for everyone to take away at least one actionable tip. My goal from the webinar was even more ambitious! I identified three of my favorite tips and immediately incorporated them into my LinkedIn profile.

Change #1: What Not To Do

Leela shared many do’s and don’ts but I have to admit the don’ts jumped out at me more…probably because I was such a frequent offender!

I learned to avoid the most common phrases in my profile, such as “team player,” “results-oriented,” “dynamic,” and “extensive experience.” Turns out we all have these skills. Who knew?

After cleaning up my profile my change was to create a vanity URL for my public profile,

Change #2: Order Some Apps

If you’re like me, you’re familiar with the basic capabilities of LinkedIn but don’t have the time to invest in diving deeper into the platform.

That all changed for me when I saw the book recommendation application. What a great way to show a little more about yourself by sharing some books you’re reading and making recommendations to your network. I always thought there was an extra fee but good news, it’s free!

I found this to be a great gateway for learning about other applications that can set me apart from all the other “dynamic problem-solvers with a proven track record for results.”

Change #3: Get Interactive

One of the coolest features Leela shared was the ability to create a poll. Ordinarily I steer clear of things like this (again, I thought it cost extra) but I was committed to making three changes, so I added a free poll to my profile:

You can create polls from this link:

With more than 100 million users on LinkedIn, there’s a whole lot of interaction just waiting to happen on LinkedIn.
