Fall is the perfect time to get outdoors in New England, so why not put on a sweater and join the Boston professional communications community on Sunday, Sept. 24 at the Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai?
The event is the nation’s most successful fundraising walk, and it benefits the nation’s premier cancer center, our own Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Last year, several Boston PR agencies did the annual Jimmy Fund Walk along with more than 9,400 other participants who raised more than $8.7 million for a 28-year total of more than $120 million. They joined forces under the rallying cry of “Communications Cares.”
“The Walk is a lot of fun, the people are friendly, and the experience is incredibly meaningful,” said Mike Brewer, a partner at Brodeur Partners, captain of Team Brodeur. “By participating, you’re effectively joining the Dana-Farber team of researchers, caregivers, patients and families.”

“Team Brodeur” is paired this year with “Walk Hero” Alexa Payamps, 20, of Methuen, who was diagnosed in 2014 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common childhood cancer.
“Not only is the Walk inspirational for patients, it’s good to do for yourself,” says Alexa. “It exposes you to other people and their problems just take your mind off your own problems for a while. It’s mind-boggling to me that others are willing to walk for a cause that may not directly affect them, yet be so passionate about it. As a person who’s had cancer, I’m so grateful for those who walk.”
No, you don’t have to walk 26.2 miles
Participants can choose from four route options:
- Marathon Walk (26.2 miles) from Hopkinton
- Half Marathon Walk (13.1 miles) from Wellesley
- 10K Walk (6.2 miles) from Newton
- 5K Walk (3.1 miles) from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Or, if you can’t make it on Sept. 24, you can be a virtual walker. Said Brewer, “Walking is a great way to give back, feel good, engage employees, perform some cause marketing, and have a blast. C’mon out!”
